PowerFlow Instructors: Kevin, Rob & Sarah
Kevin has been practicing and instructing Pilates for
over 7 years and loves the experience. Kevin has been an active athlete
from high school, through college and to the present, playing, captaining
and coaching team sports such as football, wrestling, lacrosse and baseball.
During the 80s and 90s, Kevin became more involved in family sports like
hiking, kayaking, skiing, jogging, and volleyball. Then Kevin's life changed,
beginning with a new job and a new start on life. Six months later and
35 lbs lighter! Kevin began training to become a triathlete.
The constant grind of triathlon training began to build an unbalanced body and create muscle soreness and fatigue. A friend recommended that he to look into Pilates as a way to lengthen, strengthen and balance his body. His friend said, “If you are going to take a Pilates lesson in this town , there is only one place to go… PowerFlowStudio.”
Kevin was so impressed in the quality of the mat and equipment lessons and the concept of the Pilates method that he took classes three times per week. When asked about his enthusiasm for Pilates, Kevin always replied, “It’s the single best thing I have ever done for my body.”
Wanting to help others realize the benefits of Classical Pilates, Kevin became a certified Pilates instructor with the PhysicalMind Institute and the PowerFlowMethod in December 2003.
In January 2005, Kevin committed to train for the Ironman Triathlon, a grueling race that includes swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles, and then running 26.2 miles. Incorporating Pilates workouts throughout the training and racing season helped get Kevin to the start line physically prepared.
“Focusing on my core and my form throughout the race was essential. I have an active lifestyle that puts a lot of stress on my body. Pilates continues to help me balance my body with controlled movements and inner focus. As my body ages, flexibility becomes more of an issue and Pilates method helps ensure that I will stay limber. Healthy living, good posture and Pilates allows me to maintain the life experience I enjoy.”
Rob recently relocated from Texas to New Haven where
his background in the fitness industry goes back six years and for
the past three years he has been practicing the Classical Pilates Method.
Rob is certified by Peak Pilates and has just completed his Level III
training. He enjoys working with people of all abilities, ages and
gender; helping them to meet there physical goals while connecting
their mind and body.
Rob knows firsthand what Pilates can do for one’s body and mind, as a young child and throughout his youth he suffered from severe asthma and respiratory problems, but through Classical Pilates and physical fitness, he has seen an increase in his physical health and at this time is no longer on medication.
Not only has Rob experienced what Pilates can do for the internal system but has increased his body’s flexibility, strength and stamina. Rob began to practice Pilates as a way to lower stress, stay in shape and relieve muscle pains while out on the road for work weeks and months at a time.
He is not only a certified Pilates instructor, but also a successful freelance Lighting Designer for his other true passion of theatre and opera, where he has designed lighting all over the country for numerous theatre and opera companies.
While traveling, Rob has also had the opportunity to work and study with many top Pilates teachers and studios. Rob knows first hand the challenges that travel, stress, and long work days can have on one’s body and mind and loves both the physical and mental benefits that Pilates provides.
Sarah, a native Brit, began her career as a designer
and art director in London, where she lived for 20 years.
“I first discovered Pilates ten years ago after the birth of my first child. I needed to get back in shape, my knees creaked and I suffered from neck ache. Pilates made me feel in control of my body again. There was life in those abs after all! As I grew stronger and realigned my body, my aches and pains disappeared. With a new young family with all its challenges it was important to me to stay strong and healthy.
“The unique combination of strength, flexibility and form appealed to me, the confidence I gained in my body took me back to my youth when I loved gymnastics and dance.
“I have been fortunate to have been taught by great teachers from all walks of life- from former Marines, Royal Ballet dancers, physiotherapists to a massage therapist. Because of this positive experience, when I came to Powerflow I knew that Melanie really knew her stuff! I have been extremely lucky to have taken my instructor training with her- she is a true mentor.
“I have taken Pilates through two subsequent pregnancies, minor back injuries, frozen shoulder and neck problems- there is always something you can work on as the Pilates Method works on the body as a whole.
“Pilates’ application is infinite. I love teaching because I want others to love it and feel the benefits that I have.”
Sarah is a certified Balanced Body University Level II Mat Instructor, completed at PowerFlow in 2008.
